How many hands fit in one kit?

Two adult hands holding each other, or one adult hand with a child's hand, or a baby's hand in a parent's. The bucket is 7.5 x 7.5 x 5.5 in. For a whole family (three to six hands) you need two kits and a larger container; message us before you order and we will walk you through it.

Do we need any craft skill?

No. The two things that matter are cool water and a timer, and both are on the Timing Card. First-timers get a cast with fingerprints. Sanding and the gold or silver finish are optional and forgiving.

How long do we have to hold still?

About six minutes, once the gel has been stirred and you are in position. Sit down, rest your elbows on the table and decide the pose before you mix; the dry run in step 1 is there so you are not deciding with the clock running.

What if the molding gel sets too fast?

That is warm water, almost every time. Use cool tap water (65-70°F), measure it before you open the pouch, and stir for the 90 seconds on the card. The gel then gives you a comfortable window to get both hands in. If a batch still sets early, the second pouch in the box is your second chance.

Will the fingers break off?

Not if the cast cures overnight before you demold it and you peel the gel away in strips rather than one pull. Fresh gypsum is soft for the first few hours and rock hard after a day. Keep a spoonful of dry stone back; the Finishing Guide shows the repair for a chipped fingertip, which is invisible once dry.

Is the molding powder safe for skin, for kids, for an elderly parent?

Yes. Alginate is the seaweed-based material dentists use for impressions; it is skin-safe, sets cool and washes off with water. It can catch arm hair, so a little lotion on hairy forearms first, or keep the gel below the wrist.

Yes. Let the cast dry for two to three days first, then the included gold or silver powder, acrylic paint or a clear sealer all take well. The Finishing Guide covers the order: fill, sand, dust off, finish, seal.

How fast does it ship?

1. Set the scene (5 min)
Sheet on the table, bucket in the middle, sticks and stone within reach, cool tap water measured out. Decide the pose and practise it once with dry hands: where the elbows rest, which hand is on top.
2. Mix and go in (2 min)
Molding powder into the water, stir hard for 90 seconds until it is smooth and pink, tap the bucket twice on the table to knock the bubbles out, then both hands straight in, in the pose, not touching the sides.
3. Hold hands (6 min)
Sit still and talk. The gel turns from pink to white when it has set. Wiggle each finger a little to break the seal, then draw the hands out slowly, one at a time.
4. Pour and wait (overnight)
Mix the casting stone, pour it slowly into the hollow, tap the bucket to release air, leave it overnight. In the morning, tip it out and peel the gel away like a rind. Sand, fill, finish gold or silver if you like, and let it dry a few days before sealing.

The bucket is sized for two adult hands clasped and the box holds two pouches of molding powder (400 g) plus 1000 g of casting stone. Mix both pouches, keep the hands centred, low and off the bottom, and let the gel cover the hands rather than the forearms; the dry run in step 1 is what makes that automatic.
"A finger broke off"
Fresh gypsum is soft. Leave it overnight, never pull the gel off in one go, and keep a spoonful of dry stone back to fill a chip. The Finishing Guide has the 30-second repair, and a chip fixed while the cast is damp is invisible.
"Bubbles and bumps"
Air trapped in the gel becomes little beads on the cast. Tap the bucket, do not whip the mix, and sand the beads off while the cast is still damp, which is when the stone comes away like chalk.
"It was messy"
Alginate wipes off skin and rinses off the table; the stone is the only thing to keep out of the sink. Work on the sheet in the box, pour the leftover stone into the bin, not the drain, and clean-up is five minutes.
